Can we talk about how hard it is to finish the first draft of a novel?

I started writing my beloved fantasy novel in June of 2020, and I didn't get to begin working on my second draft until December of 2023. It took me three and a half years to actually finish the plot for the first time! I feel like writers always warn you about how challenging the first draft is, but I had this small hope that just maybe they were being a tad bit dramatic.​

​

In case you are unaware, the answer is no. They are not being dramatic, and the frustration is going to consume every fiber of your being.

​

You're going to find plot holes. You're going to realize halfway through the book that one of your characters has been out of character for at least three chapters, and you're going to change your mind a lot. 

​

However, as difficult as it is, nothing will compare to the glorious feeling that comes with finishing that final sentence. If you're anything like me, keep going! The end result is always worth it!
